Shopify signs stores up to every new AI shopping channel by default

Australian stores aren't excluded from catalogue sharing, though checkout inside the AI is North America only. Opting out can take a week.

TLDR

Shopify's default 'Allow Shopify to manage for me' setting shares every merchant's product catalogue with all current and future AI shopping channels from the moment each one launches. Merchants who want out must go to Sales Channels, disable the setting manually, and wait up to seven days for data sharing to stop. Shopify's help page sets no country limit on catalogue sharing; direct checkout is limited to North American shoppers.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

01Shopify's default setting enrols stores in each new AI shopping channel as it is added.
02Product catalogues are already live across ChatGPT, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI for merchants who have not changed settings.
03Turning off Shopify Catalog access can take up to seven days to stop data sharing.
04The help page sets no country limit on catalogue sharing; direct checkout is for US, and on Meta also Canadian and Mexican, shoppers.
05Meta was added as an AI channel on 8 September 2026 with products shared by default through Shopify Catalog.

Shopify stores that have never opened the platform's Agentic settings page are already sharing their product catalogues with ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's AI surfaces, and they will be signed up to each new AI shopping channel as Shopify adds it.[2]

The default is a setting called "Allow Shopify to manage for me". When it's on, "all channels are active and … Shopify automatically enrolls you in agentic storefronts channels," according to Shopify's help centre.[2]

"We're making every Shopify store agent-ready by default," chief executive Tobi Lütke said when the company launched agentic storefronts on 10 December 2025.[1]

Meta was the latest addition. Shopify's changelog said on 8 September that products are "shared with Meta by default" through Shopify Catalog.[3]

Getting out takes a week

Merchants who want control go to Sales channels, then Agentic, and turn the setting off. They can then cut Shopify Catalog access entirely, stop automatic enrolment while keeping current channels, or switch off individual channels.[2]

Turning off catalogue access isn't instant. Shopify says "it can take up to 7 days" before product data stops being shared, and products can still be found by AI tools through ordinary web crawling.[2]

Shopify's own Shop channel can't be switched off from the Agentic section. Hiding products from every agent, Shop included, means marking them unlisted, which also hides them from search engines such as Google.[2]

Australian catalogues, US checkout

The help page sets no country limit on catalogue sharing, so Australian merchants should assume their products are included and check the Agentic page.[2]

Buying inside the AI is narrower. Direct checkout through Google AI Mode, Gemini and Copilot is for US shoppers, and Meta's covers the US, Canada and Mexico.[4][5][6]

For now an Australian shopper who finds a local store's product in one of these assistants is sent on to the store to pay. No fees beyond payment processing had been announced for any channel as of September, NoHacks reported.[7]

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do I stop Shopify from sharing my products with AI channels?
Go to Sales Channels, open the Agentic section, and disable 'Allow Shopify to manage for me'. You can then control catalogue access and direct checkout per channel. Shopify warns that turning off Catalog access can take up to seven days to fully stop data sharing.
Which AI channels receive my Shopify product data by default?
All available channels receive access by default through Shopify Catalog, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini (via the Google and YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Centre), Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces. Each new channel added by Shopify is also auto-enrolled unless you have disabled the default setting.
Can Australian customers buy directly through these AI channels?
No. Direct checkout on Google AI Mode and Gemini, and on Microsoft Copilot, is limited to US customers only. Meta's direct checkout covers the US, Canada and Mexico. Shopify's help page sets no country limit on catalogue sharing, so Australian merchants should check their Agentic settings.
