Drovers Run moves state

Stan's revival of McLeod's Daughters will be made in regional Victoria. The Stan Original is being produced by Victorian-based Werner Film Productions, part of BBC Studios, and is supported by VicScreen's Victorian Production Fund. VicScreen expects the production to spend up to $35 million in the state and support as many as 900 jobs, with work flowing to local accommodation, hospitality, transport, construction and equipment hire businesses.[1]

That is a change of scenery for the show. The original series aired on Nine from 2001 to 2009 and was filmed on location at Kingsford in South Australia, about an hour north of Adelaide.[3] It ran for eight seasons and 224 episodes and reached audiences in more than 100 countries.[2]

What Nine and Stan are promising

The revival will follow a new generation of McLeod women at Drovers Run, building on the world created by Posie Graeme-Evans, and return to themes of women working on the land, family and romance.[2] It was first announced at Nine's upfront in September.[3]

"The overwhelming and passionate response to our initial announcement made it clear that Australia is more than ready for the return of McLeod's Daughters," said Michael Healy, Nine Entertainment's executive director of entertainment. Producer Joanna Werner said: "Regional Victoria offers stunning landscapes, outstanding talent and world-class crews."[1]

Stan describes the series as "coming soon" and has not announced a release date or cast.[2]

Victoria's screen pitch

VicScreen used the announcement to promote the size of the state's screen industry. Deloitte Access Economics analysis released alongside it found Victoria's screen sector contributed $3 billion to the state economy and supported 21,100 full-time equivalent jobs in 2024-25.[1] "The series will create jobs, build local capability, and deliver significant economic benefits across regional Victoria," said VicScreen chief executive Caroline Pitcher.[1]

It is the second big Australian drama this week to confirm a Victorian shoot, after Mushroom Murders, the Erin Patterson drama greenlit for Network 10's streaming service with support from the Victorian Screen Incentive.
