TLDR
ABC News reached 11.305 million Australians aged 18-plus in August 2026, holding the top online news spot by under 810,000 people over news.com.au. The rankings land as the ABC cuts production roles and its incoming news chief has not ruled out further redundancies.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
The numbers: who reached what in August
Almost 20 million Australians visited a news site or app in August 2026, reaching 93.9% of online Australians aged 18 and over and averaging 3.39 hours of news reading across the month.[1] Few advertising categories outside finance or fast-moving consumer goods can match that scale.
Ipsos iris, the audience measurement currency endorsed by IAB Australia (the Interactive Advertising Bureau), ranked the top ten news publishers for August. Verified figures for the top three are below.
| Publisher | Unique audience (18+) | Month-on-month change |
|---|---|---|
| ABC News | 11.305 million | -2.4% |
| news.com.au | 10.496 million | -4.8% |
| nine.com.au | 9.004 million | +1.3% |
Positions four through ten in the Ipsos iris rankings are not in the verified data available to Prompt the Market at time of publication and are not reported here.[2]
A shrinking gap between first and second
ABC News leads news.com.au by 809,000 unique monthly readers, roughly the population of Canberra.[2] Both publishers fell in August, ABC by 2.4% and news.com.au by the steeper 4.8%, so the gap narrowed even as both went backwards.
nine.com.au grew 1.3% to 9.004 million, the only member of the top three to add audience month on month.[2] nine.com.au sits about 1.3 million readers behind the leader on current figures.
One caveat for any publisher or advertiser trying to chart a trend: Ipsos iris updated its methodology from July 2026 to measure only Australians aged 18 and over, dropping the previous 14-plus base.[1] Month-on-month moves from August back to July are valid; anything earlier measures a different population.
Robinson arrives as ABC trims its editorial operation
Simon Robinson started as ABC Director of News and Current Affairs in September 2026, having been appointed in May after leading large international news operations at Reuters.[3] ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks said Robinson was "one of the most experienced and respected newsroom leaders in global journalism" and pointed to his commitment to fact-based reporting as the reason for the appointment.[3]
Robinson said: "I am thrilled and honoured to be named the ABC's Director of News and Current Affairs. As a passionate believer in the power of fact-based, independent journalism, I believe the ABC plays a pivotal role in providing Australians with the reliable reporting we all need."[3]
Robinson has not ruled out further redundancies beyond the 46 screen division production roles already cut. The August Ipsos iris data, released on 22 September 2026, covers his first month in the chair.
